Boruto Two Blue Vortex Chapter 17 – Review
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 17 had the most unexpected turn. With the ongoing war against the Shinju to save Naruto and Sasuke’s lives, the gang must infiltrate the Shinju by becoming their friends and betraying them. Trust me, this chapter was fire, and you need to stick around for everything I’m about to reveal.
The Turning Point in the Shinju War
Chapter 17 of the Boruto manga begins with Sarada pondering Sumire’s confession for Boruto. They are in love with him, and this has left Sarada bamboozled as she failed to consider Boruto’s feelings and understand his position. This all ties into an important aspect of the story and Sarada activating the Mangekyou Sharingan.
Naruto’s plot focused on the cycle of hatred, but this has now been demolished in Boruto’s era. So, Kishimoto flipped it on its head. Two Blue Vortex focuses on love and the sacrifices that come with caring deeply for others. How far would one go for their loved ones to keep those bonds intact? Given that Sarada unlocked the Mangekyou Sharingan through love, this fight is only setting up for its major reveal as she will use it to save Boruto’s life.
Now, I’ll dive into that more later. As Gaara and Shinki are the latest victims, the Sand Village decides to help Team 7 track the Shinju. Kashin Koji has been feeding intel to Shikamaru to pinpoint exactly where they would be. The plan is to extract the Thorn Soul within them to revive the original body. But Yoda, over here, gets warned not to do anything reckless. This leads to an argument between the Sand ninjas, as their love for Gaara and Shinki is making them irrational regarding the plan. Yoda states that it won’t affect the mission, but I definitely think it will, and it’s foreshadowing for something greater.
The fact that Kashin Koji literally states in Chapter 17 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex that if Boruto decides to go and help Team 7 against the Shinju, he will 100% die this time around. This is because it will give Juro no choice but to teleport and kill him. It’s like the 15th death flag for our MC, so everyone needs to cut him some slack. This guy gets reminded every day he is going to die, so no wonder he doesn’t smile anymore. Heck, the day he hugs Naruto again, it’s going to make a grown man cry.
But things are worse than we imagined. The percentage of success in their mission isn’t high. According to Koji’s future-telling ability, it will only mean that once Sarada is in danger due to Yoda’s mistake, Boruto will teleport to the ninja tool that Mitsuki found to help them. In this very chapter, Yoda is definitely going to mess things up against Ryu and Matsuri. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 15, she was acting hyper-emotional when Shinki was taken, and her teammate had to stop her from crashing out.
All of this leads to Kishimoto cooking as Sarada activates her Mangekyou Sharingan to save Boruto’s life once he’s in danger. It will be peak fiction. Now, you’re probably thinking, How can you be so sure? Why is this possible? Well, Sarada will accept her love for Boruto. Just as Sumire provoked the thought, Sarada will not want to be labeled the most useless Uchiha ever. She will save Boruto’s life.
At the end of the day, she wouldn’t be able to become Hokage without Boruto by her side—just like their childhood dream where Boruto said, “I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you.” So not only would this connect to the themes of the story, but also resolve a lot of plot points, like Sarada repaying the debt of Boruto losing his eye to save her, the resolution of her feelings, the Mangekyou Sharingan power reveals, and finally showcasing her Hokage-level state by following Naruto’s nindo, which is never giving up on his friends. If you can’t save one friend’s life, how can you become Hokage?
Let’s rewind back to page 10. Team Seven decides to greet Matsuri and Ryu as friends. No, but she wants to smash. Knowing that 99% of you are degenerates in the comments, you would probably fail this mission by risking it all with an alien animal species-type thing because you’re bad. In reality, this is all a ruse by Konohamaru. Matsuri feels off and is singing for him because of Moegi, the woman she’s cloned from, and she is completely in love with him.
Konohamaru may have failed Hanabi, flopped with Lemon, and is a 29-year-old loner, but the one girl that has been by his side didn’t tell him for 20 years that she’s in love. This mission is serious, as they must collect the Thorn Soul bulbs by splitting them apart, becoming their friends, and betraying them. Buying them is useless, as they will only resurrect and are too strong.
Shikamaru updates Konohamaru on everything that has happened thus far, but he ponders how the Hokage has so much intel. It’s beyond his clearance to be informed of the truth. However, a huge reveal we predicted is confirmed: the Shinju are not intrinsically evil. The Shinju’s goal is to gain even more knowledge about the world. Like Juro in Chapter 17 of the Boruto manga, he drops a fat stack of cash to binge-read the Naruto manga, various books, and has huge respect for Konoha, holding them in high regard. He’s learning everything.
The Shinju are sentient beings who were created solely as tools, and much like the Naruto manga, we are witnessing the damage caused when you treat others this way. In the early days of Naruto, the GOAT had taught Zabuza this lesson—that Shinobi shouldn’t be treated as such. It was referred back to in Chapter 46 that Naruto has a connection with Kashin Koji due to Jiraiya’s ninjutsu. He saw it as completely wrong that Amado sacrificed him without telling him.
But this is where the terror of the Shinju comes into play. Because these Shinju were born from humans, they understand the concept of emotions and desire. They see morals as a creation of human rationalism and reasoning. From an objective lens, the Shinju believe morals don’t exist. Human morals are simply creations, just as they are. Their predatory nature stems from natural law—the survival of the fittest—rather than malice.
Shikamaru compares them to newly born wild beasts. With no evil intent, but because they have immense strength, they pose a threat to humans. The Hokage proceeds to inform Konohamaru to focus on the intent to kill them at all times. Don’t divert from believing they are foes. The mission is to manipulate the Shinju into becoming friends and betraying those feelings, as they are still innocent and don’t know any better.
We then get a huge foreshadowing for disaster as Shikamaru confirms Naruto would never take this route. But since this is for the survival of mankind, he has no choice. Think about Hawks betraying Twice in My Hero Academia—the exact same scenario is being played out in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga. Twice had a super OP quirk that the heroes needed to get rid of, so Hawks became best friends with him just to kill him so they had a chance to win the war.
Now, obviously, betrayal will reinforce the Shinju’s view that humans are the enemy. Ryu highlights this in Boruto manga Chapter 17, as they would have instantly killed Shinobi on the spot. But since they are nice now, in Chapter 4, we learn Shinju are a single conscious hive mind. However, due to the Ninshu connection to the original they cloned from, their desires have evolved into something more personal. This is why Matsuri is completely awestruck and is singing for Konohamaru, as she is emulating how Moegi would feel in this situation if she confessed her feelings.
So, the plan works. To get them separated, with Team Seven taking command, they find Boruto’s ninja tool that allows them to teleport. But they socially engineer the situation in their favor to gain the Shinju’s trust that they should all work together. Matsuri doesn’t understand why she has trouble breathing, as this is the first time she’s felt love—and it’s more important than you think.
I know people love to complain about these chapters, but because reading comprehension is kind of low these days, I’m going to help you out. If you haven’t noticed, each Shinju represents a different nature of love, whereas in Naruto, it was about hatred. All members of the Otsutsuki represented a reason as to why people wage wars in the real world. However, Sasuke’s clone, Hidari, represents parental love, reflecting the selflessness and protective instincts parents have towards their children. The inverse of this is with Ryu’s embodiment of child-to-parent love with Shinki and Gaara. Bug represents obsessive love or lust, which brings about his lurking into a Senrigan. Matsuri’s association with romantic love delves into the vulnerabilities and strengths of such relationships, as it requires trust and mutual understanding.
Each Shinju parallels Kawaki’s obsessiveness with Naruto, Sarada with Boruto being romantic, Code with Isshiki, and Amado with his daughter. So you see, Kishimoto and Ikemoto—they cooked. Now, what about Jura? Well, in my eyes, Jura is basically Meruem from Hunter x Hunter. We see he plans to buy even more knowledge from Konoha’s store in the future and isn’t hostile until provoked. He respects Naruto and what he has built. Compare this to Meruem, and we see what Kishimoto is doing.
Meruem’s journey in Hunter x Hunter is centered on his evolution from a ruthless, calculating king to someone capable of understanding and feeling love. His relationship with Komugi reveals his growing appreciation for the depth and beauty of human emotion, ultimately leading him to value connection over power. His character arc explores the transformative nature of love, the fragility of life, and the balance between strength and compassion. So Jura serves as a reflection of how love shapes human actions—its beauty and its destructiveness all at the same time.
Just take a look at his fight with Himawari throughout Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapters 10 to 13. He points out time and time again how their emotions are sparking irrational decisions, yet he wants to understand what they feel for himself and why they make the choices they do out of love. This is why Naruto is so important to Jura. In the Naruto Gaiden, Sarada asks an important question to the GOAT: why should someone value a person not even related to them? Naruto states it’s the feelings of love. Naruto is the guy that forgave freaking Orochimaru and told Sarada to treat the entire village as family.
Even recently, he made Kabuto create an orphanage for all the Shin Uchiha clones who had dangerous Mangekyou Sharingan, as he is not willing to kill them all. So, obviously, Shikamaru is right. Naruto would never go through with the plan to kill Shinju if they were not evil. Since Team Seven follows his ideals, they will feel conflicted in the upcoming battle, especially since Konohamaru calls out their plan to put Matsuri in turmoil as a little too much.
Eventually, Konohamaru wins Matsuri’s trust, reassuring her that it’s okay to feel that way and that it’s not weird to be going through this. Meanwhile, Eida uses her Senrigan to inform Koji about what’s going on. Boruto tells him not to lie about what happens next, given that their winning chances are really low. However, Koji confirms once again that he is not allowed to go because he would die. This makes me believe Sarada’s Mangekyou Sharingan will come into play to save the day. Otherwise, the fans are right about her character being kind of useless this entire time skip, and her character development has been piss-poor.
If we’re being honest, like they do say, “the apple doesn’t drop too far from the tree,” you know what I’m saying? That one there was a violation—personally, I wouldn’t have it. But given the fact that omnipotence doesn’t affect Sarada, she basically defies fate as a singularity, just as Koji mentioned in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 16. So, Sarada can change the future that Koji sees. This means her Mangekyou Sharingan could possess a special ability tied to influencing fate.
Previous Mangekyou Sharingan abilities have included time manipulation like Izanagi, dimensional control, and mind control. So, Sarada’s power doing something insane isn’t really insane. Like, I wouldn’t be surprised if Kishimoto and Ikemoto watched Interstellar, since they are fans of movies. Boruto is freaking Neo from The Matrix, and Sarada is Trinity—confirmed in a recent interview.
I think Boruto is following Interstellar in a way. Interstellar explains that love is something universal—a force that connects people and gives meaning even when science can’t explain it. It’s more than just a feeling; it’s a powerful force that can go beyond space, time, and logic. Boruto’s story is using chakra to do the same thing, and it’s exploring the same themes, with Amado being this mad scientist.
But somehow, Sarada and Sumire are not affected because they love Boruto. Chakra has Ninshu, and it connects everyone, which makes them all better Shinobi and better people.
So, speaking of love, Kawaki’s love for Naruto has driven him insane. Boruto helped him out, giving him intel that Amado put a limit on his true power. So, he pulls up on this old hand to take his cigarette away and forces him to make him just as powerful as our MC.
Now, to enjoy more peak fiction, read Boruto manga blogs that explain new updates and future predictions.
