Boruto Manga – Chapter 13 Review

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 13 just released, and Kishimoto is once again cooking with the story. He has brought back characters we haven’t seen since the first volume. We get more information on the Shinju and a long flashback of Koji Kashin meeting Boruto after escaping his battle with Isshiki. There’s a lot to talk about, so let’s jump right in.

We open the chapter with Jura looking down on Boruto after he just quick-scoped him from outside the village. As Jura is about to snipe him again, Shinju appears from the claw marks on Jura’s shirt and takes the Soul Thorn from him. Shinju also informs Jura that Boruto has an ally based on the information they gathered. Jura decides to return to the dimension with the others before the Soul Thorn rots, calling Boruto lucky by fate and not a pushover.

boruto uzumaki flashback

Back in the village, Boruto is slowly losing consciousness. We then transition into a flashback where Boruto is still on the run, surrounded by 20 shinobi, until he encounters a toad. At first, Boruto is hesitant about the toad communicating with him, but it convinces him that they don’t have to kill innocents. Boruto decides to grab onto it, and it summons him by Koji Kashin, where they have a chat for the first time. As readers, we get a whole information dump. This scene has some nostalgic vibes as it’s the closest thing we’ll get to Naruto and Jiraiya being in a room together again.

Kashin Koji tells Boruto that they are at one of Orochimaru’s deserted hideouts in the Land of Wind. Remember this for later. Koji also says that he hid the entrance with his Genjutsu, proving that he is built differently from Jiraiya, who wasn’t good at Genjutsu despite being a cyborg. Much like Mitsuki’s relationship with Orochimaru, Boruto initially doesn’t recognize Koji Kashin because, realistically, he never saw his face, didn’t know his name, and they were only on screen together for a few minutes while Boruto was stressed out watching Konohamaru get cooked. Koji then lifts his mask, and Boruto realizes it’s him from that day.

Koji wanted to verify that Boruto is actually Boruto because he was affected by Omnipotence but was able to nullify the effects due to something that occurred prior to him almost dying. We then reveal that Koji is aware of all the events that have happened up until now: Naruto vs. Isshiki, Eida and Daemon’s awakening, Boruto vs. Kawaki, Code getting his limiters off, Code creating the claw marks, Omnipotence, and the Shinju awakening. This seems to be some type of future-sight ability that allows him to see into the future. In his dying moments, his will of Jiraiya flared, and he realized he could not die before completing what needed to be done. This was to help Boruto, similar to how Jiraiya had to help the Leaf figure out the secrets of Pain before he died.

kashin koji revelations

This is a huge reveal because Koji Kashin had no reason to go out of his way to aid Boruto if he believed he was actually Kawaki. This also clears up the question of why he hasn’t confronted Amado since he sentenced him to his death by fighting Isshiki. Additionally, Koji reveals that all members were modified by Shibai’s DNA, which explains their power levels and why Katasuke felt outclassed by Amado’s tech because it’s literally alien to him, rather than using Hashirama cells. However, unlike Code, Daemon, and Eida, Delta and Boruto never awakened their Shinjutsu yet, so Koji got lucky by unlocking his near death. This also explains why Jigen wanted Daemon and Eida to destroy, along with putting limiters on Code, but we don’t see what circumstances led to that revelation. If there’s any confusion, Kawaki wasn’t modified by Shibai’s DNA because he was already intended to be Jigen’s vessel.

On the other hand, Koji Kashin reveals that this technique of his is called “10 Directions,” which allows him to see alternative futures, such as Isshiki killing Naruto and then reincarnating inside Kawaki to plant the Divine Tree. Another future before Omnipotence shows Kawaki killing Boruto and Sarada, which leads Kawaki to be helpless against Code, who used Boruto to cultivate a chakra fruit, growing the Divine Tree. He tells Boruto that the possibility of this happening is strong, but it seems there’s a changing factor in that scenario. Boruto then believes what Koji has to say since he was able to figure out Omnipotence. Koji vows to help him avoid that dead-end scenario and tells him he will teach him the skills and jutsu he saw Boruto had in the future so he can learn them sooner. Boruto then gets a spark of light in his heart again, getting excited about that along with hearing about how he can save Sasuke. Koji then reiterates the worst possible future that Boruto mentions: Code in Chapter 202 of Two Blue Vortex, telling us about the Shinju and their goals. He says that the Shinju will have an army of about 400, and in the future, Jura will kill Boruto Uzumaki in many outcomes and then prey on Kawaki, fulfilling their goal. Koji tells Boruto that they have to tread lightly since the future will constantly change with everything they alter. But Boruto has one condition: he doesn’t want to kill Kawaki. He wants to bring Kawaki back to his senses and restore his family. This puts a battery in Boruto’s back, telling Koji that he will take care of it all. He then puts on Master Sasuke’s headband in an effort to do all he can to make that worst possible future impossible.

Now, let’s hit the rewind button because a lot of information was just revealed. When I first saw the chapter preview on the official Naruto website, I thought that after Koji Kashin mentioned being in the Land of Wind, those characters would eventually pop up again because Kishimoto doesn’t mention small details like that without paying them off. I’m glad they hinted at that because, in the middle of the flashback sequence, they revealed a new Shinju that appears to be Shinki. Shinki has the same face bank that is in the form of claw markings for a Shinju counterpart. Shinki was a cool character that I wanted to see more of because of his Iron Sand abilities, so his being brought back in this way makes me happy yet curious about how he got there. Koji’s hideout is most likely where Sasori confronted Orochimaru, and both fought with their Third Kazekage puppet. My theory is that Shinki was on a scout mission at a distance away from the Hidden Sand and was encountered by Claw Grimes out for Boruto, whom they couldn’t find because of Koji’s Genjutsu, leaving Shinki overwhelmed. The last route I think this could take is that he was turned into a Shinju recently by being attacked by other Shinju and Claw Grimes. If he was a Shinju for a while, I believe Shikamaru would have had that dialogue with Gaara since Shinki is the Hokage’s nephew. Shikamaru didn’t know what these things were before Boruto appeared. Still, regardless of his turning into a Shinju, I’m sure his situation will be mentioned in the coming chapters of the Boruto manga, which will bring back the inclusion of other villages in the story.

In Chapter 13 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, we see Konohamaru with Sarada, Sumire with Boruto, and Nishi with Himawari. Sarada gets up from being attacked and says she’s fine but focuses on Boruto. Himawari then gets up and rushes over to the others when she sees a wounded Sarada and immediately takes over the situation. She then heals her wounds with her Nine-Tails chakra, which shocks everyone. I wish we would have at least seen Sarada attempt to heal her wounds as a way to give us an indication that she has been working on her Byakugan seal since she had an interest in it earlier in the Boruto manga. But the path she is on now is already leading her to be broken anyway. Himawari doesn’t really explain what happened but then notices an injured Boruto on the ground. Before she rushes to him, Kawaki tells her not to get near him, to which Sarada gives a snarky remark. Kawaki says he’s not telling her not to heal him but wants to take this opportunity to restrain him.

shinki return

Konohamaru then goes over to put handcuffs on Boruto, which is funny because when did Konohamaru become the police? Kawaki then goes over to find a toad hidden in Boruto’s clothing and destroys it, which sends a distress signal to Koji. Boruto, in the next chapter, wakes up in prison. Seriously, these cuffs have some chakra-dampening elements to them, thanks to Amado, because if not, Boruto could just Fly Raijin out of there. This opens up the story for good character moments between Boruto and Kawaki, Boruto and Konohamaru, and Boruto and Himawari. For Omnipotence, it seems the ingredients to dampen the effects are realizing something is off and talking to Boruto, who helped spark that realization. So, we will probably see someone else get off the hook next chapter. I doubt Boruto will be there for long, though, because Kashin Koji can literally just reverse-summon him at any moment.

Back at the Shinju hideout, Jura places Hidari’s Soul Thorn on the cube they hang out at, and then the tree converges around it, restoring it to its original form. Jura asks how he’s feeling, and Hidari is still confused about who he is, which is starting to seem like he’s dying of his own Shinju existence. Jura says that Hidari seems the same, and then Matsuri tells Jura that she wants to awaken a new Shinju whose Soul Thorn just appeared on a tree. She places it on the cube, awakening a new Shinju that they did not reveal, saying they need to think of a name. That concludes Chapter 13.

I think that the new Shinju has to be Shinki because that’s the last thing we see in Koji Kashin’s vision of the future. Matsuri and Bug all this time could have possibly gone to recruit strong Shinobi to turn them into Shinju.

Do you think Koji Kashin can willingly tap into his 10 Paths ability after 3 and a half years, or was it just by chance at near death? What questions will everyone have for Boruto while he’s locked up and being interrogated? What is the Shinju’s next play? Do you think the future is open for Boruto versus the other Hokage, similar to how Sasuke fought against him, but this time it’s Shinju? Comment below with your thoughts and predictions and let us know if you enjoyed this review.

As tensions rise in Konoha following Boruto’s mysterious return, we begin to see more character dynamics unfold in Chapter 14 Duty of Boruto Two Blue Vortex. With surprising revelations about Jura’s true identity and a pivotal moment involving Mitsuki’s Sage Mode, this chapter takes the story in an unexpected direction.
